Questrade has announced the launch of Custom Indexing, a new investment feature that allows Canadian investors to build and manage personalized index portfolios without paying management fees.

The new offering combines the diversification benefits of passive index investing with the flexibility of active portfolio customization. Investors can start with a broad market index template and modify it based on their preferences, including adding or removing companies, adjusting weightings, or focusing on specific investment themes.

Questrade automates portfolio management after investors create their custom index, helping them maintain their chosen strategy over time while keeping control of their portfolio holdings.

Hwan Kim, Chief Product Officer at Questrade, said the feature responds to growing demand from investors who want their portfolios to reflect their personal views and values rather than relying on standardized investment products.

“Today’s investors want to move beyond the one-size-fits-all portfolio and have their investments reflect what they actually believe,” Kim stated. He added that investors can exclude specific companies, emphasize particular sectors or themes, and maintain diversification without paying a management fee.

The Custom Indexing platform allows investors to hold up to 600 securities within a single custom index. Investors can build portfolios from a universe of more than 10,000 U.S.-listed stocks and exchange-traded funds, while Questrade plans to add Canadian-listed securities in the future.

Questrade noted that Custom Indices can be in both registered and non-registered accounts. Eligible registered accounts include Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs) and Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs), providing investors with additional tax-efficient investment options.

The feature also includes access to a library of pre-built indices created by members of Canada’s online investing community. Contributors include Braden Dennis, Simon Belanger, Dan Kent of Canadian Investor Podcast and Fiscal.AI, Tal Schwartz of North Exit Ventures, and finance content creators Lina Wu, Zac Hartley, Adrian Bar, Shay Huang, and Joyee Yang.

Rob Galaski, President of Questrade Financial Group, described Custom Indexing as a market-first offering designed to give Canadian investors access to portfolio customization tools that were previously unavailable through traditional retail investing platforms.
